Ten 21st Century Job Skills You Need for the Next Decade

The 2010s saw major changes. Just think of Netflix, Amazon, and Uber — they transformed the way we consume entertainment, how we shop, and where we look when we need a ride. These changes will keep coming at even greater speed – for instance, earlier this year Hyundai announced that they plan to launch electric flying taxis by 2023.

 

In our workplaces, thanks to artificial intelligence and machine learning, tasks that used to take us hours or days are being accomplished in seconds with greater accuracy and efficiency. This is cutting out certain administrative and production roles, but making way for others. Technology is disrupting our lives and the need for 21st Century job skills will become extremely important.

 

The backdrop to all this is a world that is shifting socially and politically, with major environmental changes. We’re in an increasingly globalized world and it’s often difficult to know where we need to focus our energies in order to stay ahead.

So where will we all be in 2030? This question consumes major universities and international organizations, and it was a key concern at Davos, the World Economic Forum’s meeting in January 2020.

 

On one of his State of the Union speeches, Barack Obama highlighted the issue in his address on education:

 

“I’m calling on our nation’s governors and educators to develop standards & assessments that don’t simply measure whether students can fill in a bubble on a test, but whether they possess 21st century skills like problem-solving and critical thinking and entrepreneurship and creativity.”

 

Another sign of the times came when the World Economic Forum launched its Reskilling Revolution Platform earlier this year. The platform’s goal is to train and reskill one billion workers over the next decade, to prepare for the millions of jobs that are set to be displaced in the near future.

 

We’re quickly turning away from the concept of “jobs for life.” If you want to thrive, you have to adapt to the 4th Industrial Revolution and learn 21st Century skills, also known as “soft skills”.
